Timbuktu by the Sea

Timbuktu by the Sea

Boscobel, Jamaica

10 people ∙ 5 bedrooms ∙ 5 bathrooms

Conjuring up images of a magnificent palace filled with exotic touches, Timbuktu By The Sea is an eclectic five-bedroom villa that combines a variety of different cultural influences, all basking in the warm Jamaican sun. From the intricately carved Dogon doors to the African, Asian and Middle Eastern influences in each room, this villa takes you on a journey of exploration around the world without ever leaving the beachfront location. Welcoming up to ten guests, it's a delightfully quirky and interesting villa that refuses to compromise on quality or comfort. Jamaica's famously laid-back character is present in every aspect of life on the island, and none more so than in the chilled-out town of Ocho Rios. While it may be the leading centre for the cruise ship trade, it's also full of unusual things to see and do, such as the 'Mystic Mountain' attraction celebrating the legendary Jamaican bobsleigh team and the nearby Dunn's Falls. This is a town where you can stroll along the leafy beauty of Fern Gully and then stop off at an exclusive restaurant for some authentic local cuisine. The beaches are, of course, exceptional, but it’s worth hiring a car and travelling a little further along the coast to find a little slice of Jamaican peace and tranquillity. It's rare to find a villa that packs so many different cultural identities under one roof and makes it work. Timbuktu By The Sea achieves it with flair and is a genuinely charming villa filled with personality. Every space is different, from romantic dining under the stars to languid living areas that encourage you to relax and socialise. The kitchen is the domain of your personal chef, who will rustle up delicious food and drinks for guests throughout the day and into the evening. A butler ensures your drinks are served perfectly chilled while two housekeepers take care of the day-to-day running of the house. The villa’s five bedrooms each have a different theme. The Bombay suite has a king-size bed and walk-in shower, while the Zanzibar has two queen beds and a bespoke soak tub in the ensuite. On the lower floor, the Fez suite has two queen beds, Siam has a cosy king-size bed, and Djenne has a queen-size bed. Each room has décor focused on the region it is named after, giving the villa a boutique feel. Outside, a large infinity pool seems to melt seamlessly into the Caribbean Sea, and steps lead down to a jetty where you can snorkel in the calm sea. The area is also renowned for diving, and as it sits between two aquatic sanctuaries, the waters are filled with colourful marine life, including turtles and dolphins. Timbuktu By The Sea is unlike anything you would ever expect in Jamaica and is definitely a place you will fall in love with from the moment you step through those ornately carved front doors.

HOW TO GET THERE

Make the journey as memorable as the arrival. Your dedicated concierge can arrange transportation from the closest airport to your private luxury villa in Jamaica.

  • By plane There are two main airports on the island, Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston and Donald Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay. For light aircraft, there are also smaller airports in Negril and Ocho Rios, as well as a small airport in Kingston that accepts charter flights and private aircraft.
  • By boat Jamaica is a major cruise destination and is particularly busy with superyachts and cruise liners during the winter months. Fishing boats provide deep sea sport fishing and coastal tours and are a great way to see a different aspect of the island as well as access diving locations further offshore.
  • By car Although car rental is available in Jamaica, the roads are narrow and there are not many north-south routes across the island. To avoid driving on the roads, your dedicated concierge can arrange private transportation to your Jamaica villa. Otherwise, taxis, known as ‘Route Taxis’, are plentiful. Look for licensed taxis that are marked by a ‘taxi’ sign spray-painted onto the bumper. If you are driving, bear in mind that in Jamaica you drive on the left.

LOCAL TIPS

  • Convert some money into local currency on arrival, as you will need some smaller bills or coins for souvenir shopping and tipping.
  • Most tap water in Jamaica is safe to drink, but to be on the safe side, it is best to stick with bottled water.
  • Avoid getting into taxis without red number plates as these are unlicensed, instead ask your concierge to organise a dedicated driver during your stay.
