Introducing Hammersmith

Walk along the river bank at Hammersmith, dotted with waterside pubs, and the atmosphere is more Henley-on-Thames than inner London. Away from the river, the nearby Hammersmith Apollo draws crowds from across the country for its big name comedy and live music acts. On weekends, this pedestrianised riverside draws in families to sprawl on patches of grass, snacking on German fare from King Street.

      Best known for

      Hammersmith Apollo

The Art Deco entertainment institution has staged performances from everyone from Pink Floyd to Kelly Clarkson – the red-velvet and stucco interiors make it a favourite arena for artists to film live performances from.

      Hammersmith Flyover

Completed in 1961, when cars were the future, this is nirvana for city planners and traffic spotters, as it was the first example of an elevated road using reinforced concrete – unless you’re stuck on it, it does have a brutalist elegance about it.

Head to the nearby river, and a peaceful water vista edged by a pub-trimmed walk spreads out.
